Incredibly Thorough Structured Wiring HowTo
Bob Catanzarite has an amazingly detailed site on structured wiring in the home. The howto gives details on the high level overview and planning stages right down to the twisted pair level. Bob gives advice on data, voice and audio wiring, and has designs on tackling home security soon. If you're planning on starting any wiring projects, you may want to keep this site in mind.1 Posted 2010-02-01 01:50:52 by Terry
As you look at Bob's site, keep in mind that what he accomplished was all done by a self-educated amateur. It's functional, systematic and neat, but it's by no means professional and could stand a number of very basic improvements.
For one thing, there's no point in trying to install everything he had in the tiny high-voltage electrical panels that he allotted to it. To his credit, he gave up early on trying to jam everything into the two boxes.
The six-way 110v outlet expander wedged between the two panels is a code violation in some areas and at the least is inadvisable. One solution would be two quadplex outlets installed in a more open and visible place than between the two boxes. Also, he should be using a surge suppressor of some sort, even if it's just a plug-in power strip mounted (again) in a more open place.
Third, it's poor practice to terminate solid core cable directly to plugs. This tends to introduce reliability issues, not to mention patching inflexibility and other problems. Appropriate patch panels and patch cables should be used, instead.
The 66 blocks for phone are okay, but in the 21st century it's more common to use a bridge circuit board for example. Or, better, a jack module would allow someone not familiar with the system to make toolless wiring changes.
The coax amps mounted with shelf brackets and MDF look inelegant and waste space.
A professional would rip out what Bob's done and install either an open backboard to take 66 blocks, patch panels, electronics, etc or two 28" structured wiring centers with appropriate modules and space to mount the modem, router and switches. Excess cable would be coiled somewhere out of sight, not in the boxes. And covers would be installed if possible.
I've seen Bob's work referenced on numerous web sites and held up as exemplarly of residential structured wiring. Unfortunately, it is decidedly not the recommended way to install structured wiring if you want a professional-looking job.
